The first question you will inevitably ask when you are thinking about decorating an area is how many lumens does this area need to be bright  enough? It depends on the lighting needs of the area, whether the area is a dining room, living room, or even an outdoor area.

Our general rule is that a living room or bedroom requires 10 to 20 lumens per square metre, while bathrooms and kitchens require 80 lumens. Depending on the size of the area, you can use 200 to 300 lumens for landscape lighting.

What Is A Lumen?

It would be helpful if you understood what lumens were before you could decide how many lumens were needed for a certain area. A lumen is the unit of measurement for luminous flux, which tells you how much light a bulb produces. Incandescent bulbs produce more lumens than LED lights do and so they can provide greater illumination in an area.

So here is a general guide to how many lights to put over your dining table or in your living room. We will discuss how many foot candles you need for a particular area. For each room in your house, here is the amount of foot candles you should have:

  • Approximately 70 to 80 foot candles in the hallway
  • 10 to 20 foot candles for the living room
  • The bedroom should have 10 to 20 foot candles
  • Lighting in the dining room should be between 30 and 40 foot candles
  • Approximately 30 to 40 foot candles in the kitchen
  • Approximately 70 to 80 foot candles at the stove area in the kitchen
  • Approximately 70-80 foot candles are required around the kitchen sink
  • Approximately 70 to 80 foot candles in the bathroom

Therefore, you should keep in mind that 1 foot-candle equals 10.76 lumens, and using this as a reference, you can determine the lumens  you need.

How Bright Is 100 Lumens?

There is enough light in 100 lumens to illuminate walkways or other outdoor areas. If you want to use a brighter light outside, you can use up to 300 lumens. One hundred lumens with a standard light bulb is equal to twenty watts.

How Bright Is 200 Lumens?

Lighting your exterior areas with 200 lumens of brightness makes sitting outside more pleasant, and this amount of brightness can also be used for pathways, ponds and pools. A household flashlight usually provides 200 lumens of brightness.

How Bright Is 250 Lumens?

It is approximately equal to using 25 watts for an incandescent light of 250 lumens. In a sitting room, bathroom, or kitchen, too much brightness can be uncomfortable. For a hallway or outdoor area, however, you can use a 250 lumen LED light.

How Bright Is 400 Lumens?
